Dark academia fantasy fans will dive into this dense, clever read steeped in portal-bending mythology, upper-crust cult rituals, and powerful, mysterious magic. Curious Tides begins after a tragedy: the loss of eight college students to a ritual in some creepy sea caves, including Romie, the effervescent and talented wielder of dream magic. Readers experience the aftermath from the perspective of Emory, Romie's best friend, and Baz, Romie's studious older brother. Pascale Lacelle's characters are fascinating to follow, filled with grief, angst, and self-doubt, and both tackle their big feelings and search for answers about what happened to Romie in different ways. At first it's frustrating that the two don't confide in each other with the same loss between them, but as they go their separate secretive ways, things get really interesting, and readers will enjoy unraveling their separate threads and following them as they come back together.

The story ramps up quite slowly, but this magical world does take some explaining. There are 16 official types of magic plus the wild cards of what the few shunned Eclipse-born can do, so it's a lot. Another impediment to the story's forward momentum is the complex mythology, but it does add that intriguing fine line between the actual and imagined. Readers ready and willing to get swept away by these world-building details will get the most enjoyment out of this wonderfully curious tale.
